Gaj (also spelled gaz or guz) is a traditional North-Indian land-area unit equal to one square yard, giving it an exact metric value of about 0.836 m2 or 9 square feet.
Because it is a square yard analogue, gaj scales linearly: to convert any parcel from square feet divide by 9, while the reverse conversion multiplies the gaj figure by 9 to restore square footage.
The unit remains pervasive in real-estate deeds and market listings across Delhi, Haryana and Punjab, providing a culturally familiar alternative to metric measures even though it is not part of the SI system.
